Sybil Under the Stars

Based on a true story, Sybil Under the Stars is about 16 year old Sybil Luddington whose midnight ride during the Revolutionary War helped save Connecticut form a British Invasion by sea.

One spring night in 1777, 16-year-old Sybil Luddington is awakened by urgent news, the Revolution needs a hero. With no one suspecting a young girl, Sybil and her horse, Star, ride through the night to rally the militia, embarking on a brave and unforgettable journey. This new play for young audiences tells the inspiring, likely true story of Sybil’s 40-mile midnight ride to warn Patriot forces of a British attack. Though her heroism helped protect her community and earned praise from leaders like George Washington, her story remained largely unrecognized for years. Sybil Under the Stars celebrates courage, resilience, and the extraordinary impact of a young girl who answered the call.

Director: Emily Swett

Characters (Actors will play multiple roles except for Sybil):
SYBIL - A 16-year-old girl, the eldest child of Colonel Henry Ludington, parentified caretaker to her 11 younger siblings, destined for marriage and motherhood, insatiably curious about the adult world, and hopeless of ever experiencing an adventure of her own. Cannot double.

STAR - A young horse, magically imbued with the ability to speak both to Sybil and to the Audience. Star’s forehead is adorned with a white, star-shaped marking. When Star speaks to Sybil, all action stops on stage, as if time has stopped. When Star speaks to the audience, even Sybil is suspended in time. STAR’s head-shake should be accompanied by some magical effect, as should the making or breaking of contact with SYBIL that allows them to speak. Can double with MOTHER, DYSON or LITTLE LUDINGTONS.

MOTHER - Abigail Ludington. Can be doubled with STAR, MINUTEMEN or SKINNERS.

FATHER - Colonel Henry Ludington, a colonel in the Continental army and miller. Can be doubled with MINUTEMEN or SKINNERS.

EZRA - A groom in the Ludington’s stable who also serves as a gardener. A mentor to Sybil, whose household duties include supporting the management of the kitchens and kitchen garden. Ezra is not a real person in the historical record, though it is likely that the Ludingtons had a staff. It’s important that they have an obvious physical injury or disability. The casting of an actor with a disability is encouraged if possible, or a crutch or a sling can be used to indicate that the character is physically unable to perform the ride.

DYSON - A messenger, very loosely based on Israel Bissell, a postal carrier who rode 345 miles from Boston to Philadelphia, losing three horses along the way. Can be doubled with STAR, MINUTEMEN and SKINNERS.

LITTLE LUDINGTONS - LEWIS (13) (offstage), TERTULLUS (11) (offstage), DERICK (10), ABIGAIL (10), ARCHIBALD (9), HENRY (7). Can all be doubled with STAR MINUTEMEN or SKINNERS. MARY (5) can double with STROM, REDDING, KENT, MRS. M., SKINNERS.

Pinocchio 20XX

This contemporary, futuristic retelling of the classic tale of a lonely toymaker, their toy child, and the journey to becoming real. When game designer Gepp designs a software that will interact like a real child, robotics expert Dr. Blue builds a prototype, but warns that the toy still needs to learn a lot from Gepp, like right from wrong, truth from fiction, and how to be real. Gepp tries to teach the toy at home, by sending it to school, and even by adding an update to guide its behavior. But there are so many other influences around the toy that everything becomes mixed up inside. When Gepp and the toy are trapped by another robot in Dr. Blue’s lab, only the toy can save them. Science meets magic and real life when the toy reaches deep into its data to save the day and finally become real.

Director: John Hulse
