PSYCHE
August 23 - August 25
A concert reading of groundbreaking new musical that asks, would you give up everything for a chance to love?
Clear Space Theater Company welcomes the creative team for a groundbreaking new musical to Rehoboth Beach this summer. After a three week workshop including Broadway artists and members of the Clear Space summer ensemble, audiences in Rehoboth Beach will be the first have the opportunity to hear Jake Landau and Emily Garber’s musical Psyche in a concert reading.
Psyche follows the classic Greek myth of a young woman worshiped for her beauty. But Psyche believes herself incapable of true romantic desire. So she prays to the goddess Aphrodite to “fix” her. When Psyche accidentally murders the man she was arranged to marry, Aphrodite curses her to marry a monster instead. Psyche expects her new husband to kill her, but instead he reveals himself to be Eros, who has been punished by Aphrodite to live forever in shadows. Although she cannot see or touch him, Psyche begins to fall for Eros.
When given the chance to escape her curse, Psyche must decide if she is willing to give up everything for a chance to love. Psyche’s music paints the power structure between gods and mortals through a blend of traditional musical theater for the mortals and traditional opera for the immortals - a marriage of worlds that has never before been seen in a stage contemporary stage musical. A musical epic of cinematic quality, all the characters are imagined as queer people divided from society either by force, circumstance, or a lack of connection. The title character is an asexual and aromatic woman who defines love on her own terms.
